Paramount and Sega have surprised us all with their recent release of a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and it includes an unexpected nod to Pokemon.
It’s been a little while since we first glimpsed Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and with the movie set to hit theaters in about a month, the anticipation has been building. If you’ve been eagerly waiting for more, today’s your day! Paramount just dropped the second official trailer, and it’s full of surprises, including a hilarious moment with a kid mistaking Tails for Detective Pikachu. Not only is it amusing, but it also left me imagining what a Sonic and Pokemon crossover could look like.
It’s hard not to dream up scenarios where Sonic characters might clash with Pokemon. I can’t see Sonic choosing Shaymin, just because it’s a hedgehog too—it’s more likely he’d go for Jolteon, which matches his speed and cool persona. Perhaps we’d see what Knuckles might be like as a Pokemon? It’s all up in the air! The trailer definitely brings more fun, showcasing a Chao-themed restaurant that Team Sonic visits, which has quickly become the highlight for me. There’s also an emotional moment—viewers who enjoy getting teary-eyed over Sonic’s past might find the match cut of Shadow and Maria poignant.
There’s so much more in store beyond just these teasers. Director Jeff Fowler has hinted at some surprises, including possible introductions of new characters for future films. While he was tight-lipped about specifics, my bet is on Big the Cat making an appearance at some point.
With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 zooming into theaters on December 20, there’s plenty of excitement to keep fans engaged as the release date approaches.
