The team at 2K Games’ motion-capture studio in California has taken a significant step by deciding to unionize. According to a recent announcement on the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) website, the unionization vote concluded with 15 employees in favor and six against it on Friday, November 22nd. This election was overseen by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to ensure everything was above board.
2K mocap animator Matthew Peterson expressed his thoughts on this development, saying, “Today, it’s clear that the staff here are prioritizing not only their own well-being but also that of their colleagues, future industry workers, and the studio as a collective entity.”
He also mentioned, “The journey towards this milestone wasn’t without hurdles, but it’s heartening to see that empathy has been the driving force behind our efforts. I am eager to engage in fair negotiations with Take-Two and hope this inspires others in our field to organize and secure the protections needed not just to get by, but to prosper.”
Adding to this sentiment, IATSE International president Matthew Loeb remarked, “This isn’t just a triumph for one studio—it’s a glimpse into the future of working conditions in the gaming industry. The 2K MoCap team has set an example that mirrors what many in entertainment circles already recognize: coming together collectively is the most effective way to ensure fairness and respect at work. Their bravery is likely to spark similar movements across the industry. This outcome showcases what is possible when workers unite for their rights, a fight we are committed to continuing.”
The push for unionization at 2K’s California mocap studio began in October, marking a pivotal moment for these employees as they strive for a better work environment.
