In a much-anticipated move announced at the September Connect conference, Meta revealed its collaboration with Microsoft to bring seamless wireless pairing of Windows 11 PCs with Quest devices. Today, the buzz is that we can expect to see a preview of this exciting feature coming December.
This new capability is set to enable Quest 3 and Quest 3S users to connect their headsets to their Windows 11 PCs, creating a versatile multi-monitor workspace. If you’re familiar with Apple’s Vision Pro and its ability to connect via Mac Virtual Display—a feature they’ve had since February 2024—this new development will seem quite similar.
Microsoft plans to roll out this functionality in a public preview sometime in December. The company is optimistic that this will catch the interest of users eager to enhance their productivity.
In a blog post, Melissa Grant, Microsoft 365’s Senior Director of Product Marketing, explained, “Windows in mixed reality introduces the comprehensive features of Windows 11 to mixed reality headsets, starting with Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. You can effortlessly hook up to your local Windows PC or a Windows 365 Cloud PC from a Quest headset, transforming it into a private, high-quality, multi-monitor workstation within seconds.”
During the initial reveal at Connect, Meta highlighted the intuitive ease of connecting to a PC by merely glancing at the keyboard. This allows users to dive right in, dragging windows across multiple virtual screens—moving beyond Meta’s typical Remote Desktop experience that utilizes Air Link.
Though Quest has earned its place as a leading standalone VR gaming device, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is steering it towards broader horizons with Windows integration.
“This move is paving the way for a comprehensive computing platform,” Zuckerberg noted. “Quest is fantastic for gaming, sure, but it’s capable of so much more. You’ll soon be able to use it for applications, video watching, and a wide range of tasks you’d expect from a general-purpose computer. Quest offers it all.”
We’ll be closely monitoring developments for any updates on release specifics, so stay tuned as we learn more.
