This is one of those posts where I’d actually advise against grabbing the deal on the table. That’s right, what I’m about to highlight is not on sale, while the item I’m telling you to avoid is currently being discounted.
If you’ve guessed we’re diving into the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 realm based on that banner above, you’re spot on. Although currently enjoying a 17% discount at Amazon, I’m here to suggest steering clear of it. Soon, I’ll be updating our in-depth review of the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 to detail my reasons fully, but as of now, I felt urged to pen this quick memo for deal hunters interested in the finest Xbox accessories.
The Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 has its allure with its impressive premium features. Users rave about the charging dock, commendable battery life, added edge from back paddles, and the joy of custom configuration. However, and this is a big however, I’m on my third one already. My fervor for Elden Ring managed to put two of these controllers out of commission. The right bumper on both my controllers is now unresponsive and the stick drift makes certain games like STALKER 2 frustratingly unplayable because of their finely-tuned sensitivity settings. It’s even more frustrating that Microsoft seems to be phasing out repairs for these in select markets, suggesting a potential successor is on its way.
So, what’s the alternative, you ask? Allow me to introduce you to the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro. It’s the controller you should consider for enhancing your Xbox and PC gaming sessions. True, it might not be on sale, yet it is still hands-down a better buy.
Let’s dig into why the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro stands head and shoulders above the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2. At the heart of the matter is durability. Razer, with years of expertise in creating top-notch mice and keyboards, has crafted the Wolverine V3 Pro with Razer’s reliable switches. It’s still a newcomer on the scene, but its tactile and clicky buttons inspire confidence that it won’t meet the same fate as my three Series 2 controllers.
I’ve run into similar problems previously with the first Xbox Elite Controller – remember those rubber grips falling off? This time, the Series 2 battles with infamous right bumper issues, something many online have also experienced. Repair is possible but often tedious and comes with additional costs due to the need for special tools.
In virtually every other aspect, the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro equals or surpasses the Series 2. Equipped with trigger locks for quicker action, adjustable profiles, Chroma lighting, and competitive-play-ready back paddles, this controller feels feature-rich.
Now, the Series 2 does edge out in a couple of departments. It boasts modularity with interchangeable sticks and parts, and its charging dock is arguably the top in its category. The battery’s exceptional too; going on and on almost indefinitely. The Wolverine V3 Pro’s battery life is “decent” for a whole day, but sometimes I forget to plug it in and I’m left without power. Razer has been accused of stinginess with their batteries, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Wolverine’s degrade faster over time compared to the Elite, but time will tell. My experience with Razer mice involves needing a recharge every day after a year.
However, I’d rather charge more frequently than run into non-working bumpers, a scenario that seemingly all Xbox Elite Controller Series 2s are doomed to face. My standard Series 2 and the one from the Xbox Design Lab have both succumbed to the same relentless issue.
Moreover, it’s quite disappointing that Microsoft is no longer providing repair options. When seeking a fix through Microsoft for mine, I was met with a discouraging “service not available in your area” message. Being based in Europe, this might be locale-specific, but it’s not reassuring, regardless of your region.
So, there you have it! Even in the midst of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with or without a sale, the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro is the top choice for Xbox controllers. It’s cost-friendly compared to the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 bundle with the charge dock, and significantly cheaper if you opt for the Razer Wolverine V3 Tournament wired edition.
### When is Black Friday?
Circle November 29, 2024, on your calendar because that’s the official start of Black Friday. However, major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart are already rolling out various discounts well ahead of time. It’s wise to keep your eyes on early offers for items sitting on your wishlist before Black Friday’s official kickoff.
### When is Cyber Monday?
Once Black Friday wraps up, gear up for Cyber Monday on December 2, 2024. Often bringing exclusive online-only discounts, Cyber Monday is not to be missed. Sometimes, deals are better than or completely different from those seen during Black Friday. Be ready to catch extended deals that might pop up just after, too.
