If you love bringing your Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 mods into online battles, there’s a bit of disappointing news coming your way. Saber Interactive, the game’s developer, has announced that starting in December, mods will no longer be allowed in public online sessions due to certain technical issues that are affecting players who don’t even use mods.
This change surfaced through a thoughtful post on Steam by Space Marine 2’s game director, Dmitriy Grigorenko. Right from the start, he assured fans that the development team isn’t against mods. In fact, they’ve always been supportive of the modding community.
“Our aim was to create a game that welcomed mods from the very beginning,” Grigorenko shared, pointing out that their game files aren’t encrypted to encourage modding. “I’m always thrilled to see the creative things our community comes up with. Mods are fantastic and will undoubtedly extend the life of this game.”
However, he emphasized the importance of game stability, noting, “We’ve seen that mods are contributing to issues with server stability, impacting even those players who choose not to use them. We’ve also heard from users about corrupted save files after playing with modded players.”
In response, the next major update slated for December will disable mods in public online matches. On the bright side, Saber has assured that mods will still be welcome in private ops lobbies and the custom Eternal War lobbies once available.
The intention here is clear: allow modders to enjoy their creations with friends in private settings while preserving a stable environment for everyone else in public sessions. Ideally, this keeps everyone pleased.
Although, as with any decision in the gaming world, not everyone will be satisfied. But one can hope, right?
Grigorenko also mentioned, “We’ll offer an easy entry point into our backend for games with mods, so modders won’t have to hack the game executable with every patch. If we inadvertently disrupt this system for mods, we’ll fix it. Plus, we plan to release some of our tools to assist modders.”
Overall, these measures should ease the process for Space Modrines, despite their public limitations. So, enjoy those close-knit gaming sessions with fellow mod enthusiasts!
