PlayStation’s top executive, Hideaki Nishino, has once again highlighted the overwhelming success of PS Portal, emphasizing that it’s become a bright spot for Sony. He also hinted at exciting future developments, suggesting that direct cloud streaming—recently introduced to the PS Portal—is just the beginning. During a conversation with the BBC, Nishino sparked interest by hinting at potential new avenues for bringing PlayStation games directly to players’ hands.
With PS Portal’s impressive sales figures, there seems to be growing buzz around Sony considering another foray into the handheld console market. Although both Nishino and Sony’s co-CEO Hermen Hulst skillfully sidestepped questions about a potential new PlayStation portable device, Nishino did shed some light on the company’s evolving strategy. He noted that as gaming continues to transform, it’s these very changes that propelled the release and success of the PS Portal.
“Just recently, we launched a beta program, enabling direct cloud streaming to the handheld,” Nishino shared enthusiastically. “Exploring different ways players can enjoy their games is always on our agenda.”
Rumor has it that after taking a break from portable gaming, Sony is quietly working on a new handheld device, with prototypes possibly already in circulation. This momentum, fueled by the PS Portal’s achievements, seems to be pushing Sony to up its game, especially since Microsoft is openly exploring the idea of an Xbox handheld console. With the next generation PS6 on the horizon, it seems Sony is keen to maintain its competitive edge and not get left behind in the handheld gaming race.
