Back in the days of Realm Reborn and Crystal Tower Alliance, encountering The Cloud of Darkness in Final Fantasy 14 was truly intimidating. However, as time has marched on, both the game and its players have evolved. Nowadays, when Crystal Tower pops up in your random roulette, it’s more likely to elicit a groan than a gasp. Sure, you’re still level capped, but the gear scaling just doesn’t hold up in those old alliance raids, making them feel like a bit of a slog compared to the new content in the Dawntrail era. All of that is about to undergo a transformation. A brand new chaotic alliance raid has entered Final Fantasy 14, promising a fresh 24-player challenge that revitalizes The Cloud of Darkness as a terrifying adversary. Forget Diablo 4, Last Epoch, and even park Path of Exile 2 for now – this is the challenge that demands your attention.
When Final Fantasy 14 patch 7.1 was first announced, Director Naoki Yoshida, or ‘Yoshi-P’ as fans affectionately know him, hinted at the intensity of the new chaotic alliance raid. He confessed, “We aimed for an extreme difficulty level,” but admitted with a chuckle, “Mr. Ozma, our developer, mentioned it turned a bit more savage than we intended.” With those words, The Cloud of Darkness is making a dramatic comeback, and if you don’t fully embrace Final Fantasy 14’s revised 24-player setup, this raid might just give you a tough battle.
Breaking away from the traditional progression of an alliance raid, this latest installment simplifies it to a singular intense fight. The setup requires the classic eight-player raid composition: two tanks, two healers, and a party of four DPS, split strategically among three groups. Tanks, in particular, will have their hands full, managing to separate foes and swapping who holds aggro during the battle’s peak. While it is challenging, experienced players can eventually attempt with premade teams of just 12, but tackling it with a full 24-member squad first is wise.
Regarding what’s up for grabs, participants can get their hands on two mounts, including one that transforms you into The Cloud of Darkness. Additionally, level 730 gear, adorable minions, and if luck is on your side, some valuable tradeable reward tokens are yours for the taking. A nice incentive also awaits for every first-time player in the chaotic alliance raid, offering a substantial bonus, multiplying the tension and thrill of the initial playthrough. The Final Fantasy 14 chaotic alliance raid is now live, ready to challenge players starting today, Tuesday, December 24.
