An experienced analyst suggests that if the Nintendo Switch 2 debuts in the first half of 2025, PS5 sales might surpass it in the U.S. market. Circana’s Mat Piscatella also anticipates several months of supply constraints due to the high initial demand for Nintendo’s eagerly awaited next-gen console.
### Can PS5 Outpace Switch 2 Sales in the U.S. if Demand is Met?
Piscatella didn’t dive deep into his reasoning behind PS5 outperforming Switch 2 in its first year aside from supply issues and the possibility of a late 2025 release. One might ponder if his forecast would still stand if Nintendo manages to avoid any hardware shortages.
Nonetheless, this prediction is quite daring given that the PS5 is nearing the latter part of its lifespan. However, if GTA 6 launches this year, we could see a significant spike in demand for Sony’s console.
“I’ve projected Nintendo’s forthcoming hardware to sell 4.3 million units in the U.S. for 2025, assuming a launch in the first half of the year. This would account for roughly a third of all video game console hardware sales in that period (excluding PC portables),” Piscatella shared on Bluesky. “Ultimately, unit sales will hinge on manufacturing capacity and intent. I still foresee the PlayStation 5 leading in overall hardware sales within the U.S. for that year.”
