Exciting news for gaming enthusiasts: the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be announced on Thursday, January 16th. Many might recall that the original Switch also had its grand reveal on a Thursday, back in 2016.
According to a well-respected leaker with a solid track record, the official announcement for the Nintendo Switch 2 could indeed happen in early 2025. This timing suggests we might see the new console hit store shelves in the first half of the year.
For some time now, fans have been buzzing about what has been described as Nintendo’s worst-kept secret. Reports indicate that mass production of the Switch 2 kicked off around late September or early October 2024. This notion is further backed by numerous hardware leaks that have surfaced since then. Nintendo, on their part, has twice mentioned that they intend to officially unveil the next console before March 31, which coincides with the end of their current fiscal year.
Come the third week of January 2025, Nintendo is set to finally fulfill that commitment, according to well-known leaker NateTheHate. During the January 13 episode of his podcast, he mentioned that sources told him the big reveal would be on Thursday, January 16. This aligns with Nintendo’s penchant for making significant announcements on Thursdays, similar to their 2016 Switch teaser. Furthermore, Tom Warren from The Verge corroborated this, noting he too heard of the scheduled unveiling for this week.
As anticipation builds, it’s yet unclear if Nintendo will drop a brief teaser on social media before a larger event, reminiscent of how they introduced the 2017 model. Given the slew of leaks, a grand reveal may not surprise the keen fans who have watched this story unfold over the recent months. The sheer volume of leaks even led Nintendo to address one Switch 2 replica, a rare move for the company regarding leaks.
Rumor has it the new Switch 2 boasts a slightly larger form than the Switch OLED Model, measuring about 270 x 116 x 14mm, and will include an 8-inch LCD screen. The Joy-Cons are expected to attach via magnets, and interestingly, there’s speculation about a new “C” button on the right controller. While its function remains a mystery, it might tie into a rumored mouse-like pointer mode.
When it comes to games, the launch lineup for the Switch 2 remains shrouded in mystery. While RPGs like My Time at Evershine and Bestiario have been announced for the new console, these aren’t expected to be available at launch. Should the console indeed launch in early 2025, Nintendo will likely bolster its initial success with a couple of heavy-hitting first-party titles.
