It’s an exciting time for virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts, especially those interested in motion peripherals. Just an hour after Roto VR unveiled their $799 rotating game chair, Virtuix has finally set a September 10 release date for the much-anticipated Omni One VR treadmill. I emphasize “finally” because this $2,595 system, excluding shipping fees, has been more than a decade in the making.
Looking back, our last update on this system was headlined, “A decade later, this VR treadmill is finally ready to ship,” dating back to April 3 of the previous year. It sometimes seems like technology is racing ahead at breakneck speed, but in other cases, it crawls at a snail’s pace. Unfortunately, hardware startups often find themselves plodding along with the latter.
Throughout the years spent developing this product, Virtuix has certainly garnered substantial interest. The challenge of simulating realistic movement in VR remains largely unsolved. The common static solutions attempt to fool your mind into believing you’re moving, despite the fact that you’re stationary, often with the unfortunate downside of nausea.
During its development phase, Virtuix’s timeline has intertwined with the surge in mixed reality interest, spurred on by big names like Oculus/Meta, HTC, and now Apple. The company reports raising a considerable $40 million in funding through venture capital and individual investments. The Omni One also enjoyed significant exposure by featuring as a model for a similar setup in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of “Ready Player One.”
At first glance, the Omni One system might appear straightforward. Ditching the idea of a mechanical treadmill, it ingeniously employs a passive design. Users wear special shoes and, by essentially slipping but staying in place on a concave platform, simulate movement.
CEO Jan Goetgeluk expressed the company’s enthusiasm as the launch date edges closer, stating, “With the official launch date set for September 10, we’re eager to welcome gamers into the Omni One community. The overwhelmingly positive reactions from our beta users have fueled our excitement, and we can’t wait to launch Omni One and transform the gaming experience for players of all ages.”
During the pre-order phase, Virtuix managed to sell 3,000 units of the Omni One, indicating a strong interest and anticipation from the gaming community.
