Pixelity, a game development studio from Korea, has announced their exciting new project—a cutting-edge XR game inspired by the iconic ’90s anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995).
In a recent blog post, Pixelity shared that they have secured an official licensing agreement with Japan’s Studio Khara. This partnership allows them to develop the XR game based on Evangelion. The game is set to roll out in three parts, capturing the essence of all 26 episodes from the anime. The first chapter is already underway, with a targeted release date in 2026.
For those of us who have been fans of Evangelion since the beginning, this news is especially thrilling. Neon Genesis Evangelion wasn’t just an anime; it was a game-changer for the entire animation industry, spearheading a major revival of anime culture in Japan during the 1990s and influencing countless series that followed.
The anime’s storyline is set in 2015—a futuristic setting when viewed from its original air date in 1995. It centers around Shinji Ikari, who is destined to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid mech and humanity’s final hope against the enigmatic Angels attacking Tokyo-3.
As of now, Pixelity hasn’t disclosed the exact platforms for the game. However, they’ve teased a rich and immersive XR experience that lets players explore diverse settings following the anime’s plot, engaging in mission-based gameplay and thrilling battles.
An intriguing aspect of the game will be its interactive elements, allowing players to collaborate with familiar characters from the Evangelion universe. This social dimension is anticipated to be a hit with the fanbase, and Pixelity aims to deliver a quintessential action-adventure gaming experience.
Since its inception in 2017, Pixelity has been at the forefront of VR game development, with notable titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018) under their belt. The team is also busy working on other projects, including The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
While fans have experienced Evangelion in VR before, particularly with Bandai Namco’s Project i Can and their VR ZONE attraction in Shinjuku back in 2017, this new endeavor by Pixelity marks the first time there will be an official at-home game for the series.
