Having enchanted gamers since the late 1990s with over two dozen releases, the Atelier series finally makes its debut on Xbox with Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories and the Envisioned Land. Diving into its opening chapters and chatting with series producer Junzo Hosoi, it’s evident that this Xbox debut isn’t just another entry; it’s arguably the most ambitious one yet.
"As a long-time Xbox enthusiast, I’m excited to introduce this series to the platform," Hosoi shared via email. "However, rather than simply calling this the next game in the Atelier franchise, I see it as a fresh JRPG series with familiar Atelier elements."
My play session confirmed his claims. The game features conventional RPG elements—strategic real-time battles, crafting, and exploration—but they are seamlessly interconnected in a way that sets it apart from others in the genre. At the heart of its allure lies an incredibly intricate crafting system.
Hosoi emphasized, “The charm of the Atelier series is deeply rooted in the synthesis and alchemy processes. The gameplay cycle revolves around gathering resources in the field, battling, and employing the synthesis system. These elements are interdependent.”
This charm extends to the characters, particularly the titular Yumia Liessfeldt. She’s an older, more mature protagonist compared to previous series heroines.
Hosoi offered more insight: "Yumia, at 21, is on a journey of self-discovery. Her story encapsulates her growth into adulthood, marked by her independence and core values. While characters like Ryza and Sophie had mentors to guide them, Yumia carves out her own path and is decisive in her actions." And yes, she rides a motorcycle!
In Atelier Yumia, the new continent of Aladiss harbors a distrust of alchemy, prompting Yumia to prove her capabilities. While her synthesis proficiency stands out, there’s also a new building mechanic that survival game aficionados will appreciate. However, it was Yumia’s battle skills that truly took me by surprise.
Historically, combat in the Atelier games followed a turn-based format. The series began transitioning to real-time with the Atelier Ryza titles, and with Atelier Yumia, the development team took player feedback to heart, resulting in a complex combat system ripe for mastering.
Hosoi detailed the changes: "We’ve overhauled combat mechanics, adding both close and ranged combat options. Players can maneuver their active character freely around enemies or shift between attack zones. They can guard, dodge attacks in real time, and even perform powerful cooperative maneuvers with stunned enemies. We’ve aimed to showcase player skills within battles."
In practice, battles are dynamic; players can seamlessly switch control between Yumia and her companions. Positioning is crucial since you can anticipate attack zones, but executing a perfect guard or dodging requires skillful timing. While individual skirmishes might be straightforward, things get intense in multi-enemy encounters where safe spaces are scarce.
The battles are further enriched by varying enemy vulnerabilities and the opportunity to initiate compelling Friend Actions. The game might look incredibly charming, but it demands acute situational awareness! Luckily, you can exit battles as easily as you enter, allowing you to gain experience quickly or bypass encounters when you’re in a hurry to get back to town.
Yumia doesn’t undertake this adventure alone; she’s accompanied by several companions. The game’s prologue introduces these characters before the narrative rewinds to earlier events. One standout character is Flammi, Yumia’s witty, floating sidekick. Hosoi unexpectedly drew a parallel to an Xbox legend when discussing Flammi.
"Flammi’s creation was inspired by Halo’s Cortana. I wanted to craft a dynamic dialogue between the protagonist and a close, ever-present companion. My enjoyment of Halo led me to include a mascot in Atelier Yumia."
This release comes during an eventful time for Koei Tecmo, with recent hits like Dynasty Warriors Origins and surprise announcements such as Ninja Gaiden 4. There’s an undeniable buzz driving these projects, as Hosoi explained.
"Within Koei Tecmo, our brand producers maintain fantastic rapport. We hold conferences where we critique each other’s developing games. This collaborative environment allows us to share insights and improve our creations. Ultimately, it helps achieve my goal of making Atelier Yumia recognized globally as the pinnacle of the series."
