Warner Bros, a behemoth in the entertainment world, has made headlines by closing the doors on three of its gaming studios.
Breaking the news, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier revealed that Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and the mobile-centric San Diego studio are the ones facing the axe. Monolith, a seasoned player in the industry known for iconic titles like Fear and Condemned, more recently wowed gamers with Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. They were also in the midst of developing a highly anticipated Wonder Woman game, announced in 2021, which has now been shelved. Alongside this announcement, Warner Bros has issued a WARN notice impacting 131 employees in Kirkland, Washington—Monolith’s base.
Player First Games found its footing with the game Multiversus, albeit not without its challenges.
Warner Bros has confirmed these developments. A company representative shared, “We’ve had to make some tough calls to streamline our development studios and align our investments around key franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.”
The spokesperson continued, “After a strategic review, we’re closing Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This decision stems from a strategic shift rather than a reflection on these teams or their undeniable talent.”
They added, “Monolith’s Wonder Woman project will unfortunately not proceed. While our ambition was to craft a top-tier experience for fans and players of this iconic character, it doesn’t align with our current strategic goals. It’s another difficult choice, given Monolith’s rich history of creating memorable fan experiences.”
Concluding the statement, the rep said, “We hold the dedication of these teams in high regard and are grateful for every employee’s contributions. While today is tough, our focus remains on delivering exceptional games from our renowned studios and driving our games business back to profitability and growth come 2025 and beyond.”
