One of the brilliant minds behind the game Undermine(d) sat down with us to spill the latest on World of Warcraft’s exciting new chapter. Picture a city in Azeroth like you’ve never seen—alive with energy and featuring roads meant for high-speed adventures. Dive into how you’ll navigate through its streets in cutting-edge hot rods.
Imagine if New York collided with a steampunk universe where safety is but a myth. That’s the vibe when you explore Undermine, a fresh zone that just debuted this week in World of Warcraft. I had the joy of spearheading the design for this zone with my incredibly talented teammates at WoW, and I’m eager to share more about this goblin city and its thrilling vehicles.
Deep Dive, Then D.R.I.V.E.
World of Warcraft shakes things up with its latest update, where the D.R.I.V.E feature—officially, the Dynamic and Revolutionary Improvement to Vehicular Experiences—takes center stage. We turned that mouthful into reality, and it’s amazing.
This update lets players hit the ground running with the G-99 Breakneck, WoW’s very own version of a hot rod. You’ll unlock this beauty early on during your questing. Start by completing “Eyes from Above” in the main campaign, then move on with “No More Walkin’ Here” and you’ll soon be schooled in the Breakneck tutorial.
The creative spark for these vehicles is drawn straight from the World of Warcraft goblins’ signature art style, where everything may look makeshift yet ingeniously complex. The G-99 Breakneck boasts over-the-top features—think massive flames shooting from the car—that feel right at home on the chaotic streets of Undermine.
One feature we were keen to introduce was drifting, something racing game fans will know well. Bringing this element to World of Warcraft was a feat, yet it thrilled everyone on the team. We wanted players to feel that rush of freedom and control, similar to the thrill of driving your first car and unlocking newfound adventures.
This car isn’t just your typical ride; it’s also a passenger vehicle. Friends can hop in and explore the lively streets of Undermine together. Players can engage in races, challenging themselves on both regular and reverse tracks. For those who aren’t too keen on high speeds or get queasy, we’ve ensured customization options abound—from slower engine settings available right after unlocking, to using regular ground mounts if that’s preferred.
Take to the Streets
But what’s a cool car without an exciting place to drive it? In Undermine, you’ll spot these cars zipping around, providing a lively atmosphere and tempting you to join the fun. Whether you’re delivering hot towels or tackling ghostly tigers spooking kids, you’ll find yourself woven into the fabric of this vibrant city.
Undermine thrives with activity. As you zoom around in your car (flanked by sewer-based fight rings!), you’ll cross paths with pirates, mobsters, sneaky individuals intent on breaking your ankles, culinary wizards, and more.
Beneath Undermine’s artificial sky lies a city bustling with energy, a goblin hub of trade and culture. Unlike other cities in World of Warcraft, this is densely packed and brimming with life, as its residents hustle through their daily routines.
This zone isn’t just about the present; it reflects a grander future. With places like Slam Central Station whisking you anywhere your imagination dares, Undermine showcases goblin innovation at its finest. The city, filled with cleverly named landmarks like the Incontinental Hotel and the Gallagio, paints a picture of a society fueled by growth and creativity.
The story in Undermine is one of progress. It intertwines with the central themes of The War Within, as characters such as Orweyna guide players through the Ringing Deeps and the early story stages. Whether meeting for the first time or reconnecting with figures like Renzik and Gazlowe, players gain insight into the lives of those calling Undermine home. While some, like Gazlowe, have ventured off for new experiences, others find their heart’s home right here—some need to escape, some are perfectly content staying put.
As the narrative progresses, Gazlowe experiences a change of heart, triggering a revolution where players can help topple tyrants and free the city. This rebellion underscores the collective strength of the people against oppressive regimes.
So, come along to Undermine, a city where fast rides and shadowy deals are the order of the day. Remember, in the world of drifting, it doesn’t matter if you slide a little or a lot, as drifting is drifting!
The Undermine(d) update is now live in World of Warcraft, ready for you on PC through Battle.net. For additional details, head over to WorldOfWarcraft.com.
