Silent Hill f has stirred quite the buzz in the gaming community, and understandably so. It’s been a long time coming for a new mainline installment in this legendary horror series. What’s got everyone talking this time, though, is its shift away from the eerie town of Silent Hill to the haunting landscapes of rural Japan in the 1960s. The anticipation hit new heights following its full reveal, with its Steam page hinting that it might just be the darkest, most boundary-pushing chapter in the series so far.
Watching yesterday’s unveiling of Silent Hill f left me genuinely impressed. Honestly, returning to Silent Hill itself would have been satisfying, but the decision to explore a completely new setting with fresh faces and monsters feels like a bold, exciting move. While previous entries in the series have tackled disturbing and grisly themes, it seems Silent Hill f might be venturing into even more unsettling territory.
A scroll to the bottom of its Steam page reveals a mature content warning, which isn’t unheard of for horror games. However, the warning for Silent Hill f stands out with surprising specificity. This is despite the fact the game is only available for wish listing at the moment, and Konami hasn’t dropped any hints about its release schedule yet.
It reads: “This game contains depictions of gender discrimination, child abuse, bullying, drug-induced hallucinations, torture, and graphic violence. The game is set in Japan in the 1960s, depicting aspects of the era’s customs and culture. These depictions do not reflect the opinions or values of the developers or any individuals involved.”
Whoa, that’s heavy. You’re bound to expect graphic violence in a Silent Hill game, but the themes here dive deep. While psychological horror thrives on unsettling experiences, some might see these themes as crossing a line given today’s sensibilities.
The Steam page also advises players, “if you feel uncomfortable at any point while playing, please take a break from playing or speak to someone you trust.”
During the Silent Hill Transmission stream, which ran for 40 minutes, I didn’t initially pick up on such intense themes being a focus for Silent Hill f. The creators were more about “finding beauty within terror” and reassuring us that they’re keeping the atmospheric and psychologically chilling feel of past games intact. Still, it looks like they might be dialing up the darkness in this new tale.
