NVIDIA’s recent GPU drivers have stirred up quite the storm for users of GeForce RTX 40 series, as well as some older models, leaving many grappling with complicated issues that NVIDIA has yet to properly address.
## Widespread Troubles with Driver Version 572.XX on RTX 40-Based Systems
When the RTX 50 series debuted in January, it seemed that NVIDIA shifted its focus, leaving the RTX 40 series somewhat sidelined as far as bug fixes are concerned. While the RTX 50 series faced its own challenges, like the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), the RTX 40 series had been relatively stable until NVIDIA rolled out new drivers designed for the RTX 50, inadvertently stirring up issues for the RTX 40 models.
Sharing his experience online, Reddit user u/Soctty1992 captured the attention of many by detailing issues with driver 572.XX. Many other users echoed his concerns, reporting serious problems such as hard crashes, black screens, and display anomalies—problems that were far less common before the troublesome 572.XX update.
In many cases, users found themselves reverting to the older 566.XX drivers, which seemed more stable before the release of the 572.16 driver on January 30th. This driver was intended to support the new RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 with features like DLSS 4, Multi-Frame Generation, and DLSS Override. While activating these new features didn’t guarantee issues, it seems a confluence of factors with the new driver additions has been the culprit.
One frustrated user shared that their RTX 4080 couldn’t run Cyberpunk 2077 without crashing immediately, a problem that didn’t exist with the earlier drivers. Another with an RTX 4090 dealt with black screens, system freezes, and even problems with monitors staying off entirely—all of which disappeared after switching back to the 566.XX drivers.
Despite numerous reports and pleas for help from users since late January, NVIDIA has seemingly focused its efforts on addressing BSODs for the RTX 50 series, eventually resolving those after weeks of complaints. Sadly, for RTX 40 owners, the only reliable solution has been to revert to older drivers, sacrificing access to the perks of the newest ones like the Transformer Model DLSS 4 and other updated features and game support in the process.
