With the PlayStation 5 becoming the go-to console for PlayStation enthusiasts, the aging PS4 is gradually seeing less support. A significant part of this shift involves a beloved MMORPG discontinuing support for its PS4 version, while generously offering players a free upgrade to the PS5 edition.
## Black Desert Online for PS4 is Shutting Down
Pearl Abyss has officially announced its decision to cease support for both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Black Desert Online. However, fans of this MMORPG still have a few months to enjoy the game before a full transition to current-gen consoles. The developers plan to shut down the older versions during scheduled maintenance on June 26, and players will have the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version for free, ensuring all account details and purchases are carried over.
In a message to players, Black Desert Console Live Service Manager Brian Choi reassured, “You can rest easy knowing your game data is secure.” He emphasized that once players transition to the PS5 or Xbox Series, their account information will remain intact. He added, “We recognize that this decision might be disappointing for some, but Black Desert has consistently seen updates aimed at enhancing adventures for our community.”
Choi elaborated, “Despite our continuous efforts to optimize the game for previous-generation consoles, we’ve hit a technological wall where the hardware simply can’t support the latest content efficiently. After much thought, we’ve concluded that prioritizing the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series platforms is the optimal way to offer a more reliable and superior gaming experience.”
Black Desert Online made its U.S. debut in 2016, garnering a mix of reactions. According to Metacritic, it scored an average rating of 73 from 35 critics, following its PS4 and Xbox One launch in 2019.
