Ubisoft, the well-known French game publisher, seems to be stepping into familiar territory with a new battle royale project that’s being crafted to challenge the likes of Apex Legends.
According to reports from Insider Gaming, this upcoming game, which goes by the codename Scout, apparently shares a striking resemblance to Respawn and EA’s popular title. In fact, at one stage, Scout’s artwork was even used as a thumbnail for that project. There are whispers that some of its characters bear an uncanny resemblance to those in Apex Legends, suggesting that Ubisoft has been developing this for a good while now.
The strategy here looks pretty straightforward: Ubisoft seems keen on attracting gamers from Apex Legends, especially since Electronic Arts, Apex’s publisher, has acknowledged a dip in its financial performance. A source close to the matter mentioned, “I believe their plan is to tap into the dropping player numbers of Apex, with Ubisoft’s top execs seeing a potential gap in the market for a new hero-based battle royale.”
It’s worth noting that Ubisoft isn’t new to the realm of free-to-play battle royales. They launched Hyperscape back in 2020, although it met its end just a year and a half later. This development follows closely on the heels of Ubisoft’s decision to pull the plug on another free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the close of 2024.
Looking ahead, fans of Apex Legends have something to anticipate—a new 2.0 version is in the pipeline, with its release slated for sometime post-April 2026.
