Soul Paint offers a unique VR experience that blends 3D artistry with self-reflection. Debuting at SXSW 2024, this project by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit features narration by Rosario Dawson. It invites users to discover and choreograph their emotions through immersive technology, allowing them to explore a virtual world where they can draw on a 3D representation of their bodies.
Utilizing body-mapping and virtual reality, Soul Paint aims to foster understanding and connection by exploring emotions. The creators emphasize its potential to promote empathy and social bonds, encouraging participants to share their emotional discoveries at the conclusion of the experience.
I had the chance to try Soul Paint firsthand at the NewImages Festival 2025 during a 20-minute XR Market session. It all starts with a powerful prompt: “Where are you feeling?” Initially unsure, I soon found the experience deeply spiritual. Within this serene environment, you are encouraged to express yourself physically.
The journey is soothing and introspective, leading to a sense of self-realization. While my artistic skills leave much to be desired, the drawing was exactly what I needed. Participants can also leave a voice note, which can be shared to express emotions when words fall short.
Soul Paint serves as a virtual mirror, offering limited interaction but a profound sense of embodiment and player freedom. Though not deep as a standalone experience, it shines through thoughtful and meditative layers. I hope more experiences like this emerge.
For now, it’s unclear if Soul Paint will have a home release, but we’ll keep you updated with any new information.
