AMD has been quick to squash any rumblings about a 32 GB version of their Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU. If you caught our last update, some speculation emerged from a Chiphell leaker suggesting that AMD was gearing up to launch a 32 GB edition of the RX 9070 XT by year’s end, reportedly as part of the ‘Gaming’ series instead of their PRO lineup.
However, this rumor won’t be coming true. AMD’s Frank Azor put a stop to the speculation via a post on TechPowerUp’s social media, clarifying for everyone that a 32 GB variant isn’t in the cards:
“There’s no 32 GB capacity version of the 9070 XT,” he wrote.
The Radeon RX 9070 XT will come equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Given the GPU’s capabilities, bumping it up to a 32 GB model wouldn’t necessarily enhance gaming performance significantly. The initial rumor hinted at dual-purpose optimization for AI and gaming applications, but those dreams have now been dashed.
Thus far, AMD has stayed away from releasing a 32 GB gaming GPU, and it seems logical. An upper-mid-range GPU leveraging that much memory doesn’t fit with AMD’s strategy—at least not when the RX 9070 XT, based on the Navi 48 GPU, is positioned as their flagship model with RDNA 4 architecture.
Within the RX 9000 series, models like the RX 9070 and those running on Navi 44 will naturally trail behind in terms of specs and performance. However, we won’t have to wait too long for more details—AMD plans to officially unveil the RX 9000 series at an event on February 28th. At this event, they will finally disclose specifications, pricing, and performance metrics firsthand.
The cards are expected to hit the shelves in early March, just as NVIDIA plans to roll out their GeForce RTX 5070 GPU. In past discussions, Azor indicated that AMD’s 70-class models would rival NVIDIA’s offerings. So, it will be fascinating to watch how the RX 9070 XT or 9070 compares with the RTX 5070 Ti or RX 5070 when the market showdown begins.
