As expected leading up to the event, The Game Awards’ coveted Game of the Year accolade was captured by a major AAA title that just about anyone could appreciate: Astro Bot, which was a choice that, while safe, was well-earned. However, in 2024, Balatro—a standout indie roguelike deck-builder from the lone developer LocalThunk—emerged as a formidable contender due to the critical acclaim it garnered. While Balatro swept the indie categories at The Game Awards, it’s hardly shocking that it continued its winning streak, completely owning the indie scene. The game finally clinched a well-deserved Game of the Year title at the 2024 Indie Game Awards.
Fortunately, the 2024 Indie Game Awards, determined by a diverse mix of publications, indie gaming personalities, and industry experts, didn’t overlook other remarkable titles. Games like 1000xResist, Animal Well, and Thank Goodness You’re Here received their due recognition, which they had sadly missed out on at The Game Awards. Yet again, UFO 50 missed out on honors, which many could argue was an oversight.
For those disappointed by the predictable blockbuster choices at The Game Awards, they’ll find solace in the Indie Game Awards list of winners highlighted below.
