Firaxis recently lifted the curtain on the upcoming Civilization 7 update, and it promises to be one of the most exciting patches in the strategy game’s history. This update directly addresses some of the biggest gripes players have had, offering a chance to continue playing past the Modern Age and reintroducing the much-loved Team Multiplayer mode from earlier Civ titles.
Civilization 7 is truly a bold step forward for the franchise, setting itself apart by dividing the game into three distinct ages and aiming to minimize unnecessary micromanagement. Despite its innovative approach, not all changes have been met with enthusiasm. Some elements haven’t quite resonated with fans, presenting a few issues along the way. However, the upcoming 1.2 update appears to be a game-changer and is likely to win over many skeptics.
As previously hinted, the patch will introduce the One More Turn feature. While the game traditionally declares a winner at the conclusion of the Modern Age, this feature allows players to extend their sessions indefinitely, either chasing outright victory or exploring alternate win conditions. Firaxis is also considering expanding this feature to allow endless play in single-Age games, such as focusing solely on the Antiquity or Exploration Ages, which will definitely be a big hit for fans of open-ended gameplay.
For those who thrive on competition and enjoy teaming up with friends, the update brings back Team Multiplayer from Civ 6. This popular mode lets multiple players collaborate in advancing their civilizations, competing against another team, with victory going to the individual winner’s entire squad — adding a new layer of camaraderie and strategy to the game.
One of the major criticisms players have had with Civilization 7 revolves around the lack of variety in map generation and resources, which felt a bit repetitive. In response, Firaxis is shaking things up by introducing ten new resources and randomizing their distribution. According to the developer, while certain key resources will still be guaranteed each Age to ensure progression, the rest will be more varied, making exploration, trade, and strategy uniquely distinct across different games and Ages.
Additionally, the update will debut a Hemisphere Identity system that ties specific resources to certain map sections. Together, these adjustments are expected to inject much-needed unpredictability and diversity into the gameplay, elevating the experience significantly. A previous attempt to improve map aesthetics set the foundation, but these changes are poised to take it to the next level.
Version 1.2 is also set to make Food more crucial in the later stages of the game, reduce the frequency of game-altering natural disasters, and introduce a ‘Repair All’ option to streamline gameplay, cutting down on micromanagement.
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 22, when Civilization 7 update 1.2 makes its grand entrance. You can check out Firaxis’ detailed update notes for more insights.
Rest assured, Firaxis is still diligently working on additional promised features that need a bit more time, such as Steam Workshop support, auto-explore options, enhanced game setup settings, and more diverse map types and sizes.
