Classic Batman nemesis Clayface is making his way into the upcoming series, Creature Commandos, and chances are you’ll be familiar with the voice behind the character.
Set to debut next month, Creature Commandos will mark the first official entry into James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe through an animated series spotlighting some of the lesser-known heroes and villains from the DC comic books. Among the eclectic cast is Doctor Phosphorus, voiced by Alan Tudyk. Tudyk has lent his voice to many memorable characters, including K-2SO in “Star Wars: Rogue One,” King Candy in “Wreck-It Ralph,” and Heihei in “Moana.” Fans of DC will also recognize Tudyk as the voice of Clayface in the animated “Harley Quinn.” In a chat with Rotten Tomatoes, Tudyk revealed he’ll reprise his role as Clayface in Creature Commandos, though it’s a fresh take on the character.
“I get to play Clayface in this series,” Tudyk mentioned nonchalantly. He described the Harley Quinn version of Clayface as “an idiot,” in contrast to this new portrayal where the character is “a homicidal maniac.” He found it thrilling to have the opportunity to explore the same character in vastly different ways. Tudyk added, “That’s really cool about DC. I get to play the actual same character two completely different ways and I like them both. It’s really nice that James let me play Clayface. I didn’t even have to ask.” Remarkably, Tudyk’s Clayface is the first Batman character to be introduced in this new DCU, even before Batman himself, aligning well with Gunn’s unconventional approach to crafting a comic book film universe.
It’s also worth noting that Tudyk had earlier been linked to a “secret role” in Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. This has sparked speculation that we might witness Tudyk bring Clayface to life in a live-action format sooner than anticipated. However, given Tudyk’s range as an actor, it could very well be a completely different character. We’ll have to hold our speculations until July 11, 2025, when Gunn’s Superman movie hits theaters. In the meantime, mark your calendars for December 5, because that’s when Creature Commandos will be available for streaming on Max.
