You know how many games out there try to capture the magic of FromSoftware titles? They’re everywhere, right? But every so often, a game pops up that genuinely deserves some attention, and Nine Sols by Red Candle Games is one of those rare finds. If you’re into Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, this is definitely a game you’ll want to check out. Now available for both PS4 and PS5, it’s creating quite a buzz.
Nine Sols is Making Waves
This year, Nine Sols was initially introduced to the PC crowd, but it’s now extending its reach to PlayStation users, offering a mesmerizing metroidvania experience set in a "taopunk" world. With its hand-drawn 2D art style, the game draws gameplay inspiration from titles like Sekiro, Hollow Knight, and Katana Zero. To really appreciate its unique vibe and gameplay, be sure to watch the trailer.
In the words of its PS Store listing, "Nine Sols is a lore-rich, hand-drawn 2D action-platformer with Sekiro-inspired, deflection-based combat. Embark on a journey of Asian fantasy, explore a land once ruled by an ancient alien race, and follow a vengeful hero on a quest to slay the 9 Sols—the powerful rulers of this forsaken realm."
The game made a strong debut on PC, earning commendable reviews. Over on Metacritic, it holds an impressive 83 from expert reviews. Even more telling is its 8.8 user score, which is quite an achievement given how users can be tough critics.
Then there are the Steam reviews. With more than 14,000 players chiming in, the game is rated "overwhelmingly positive," indicating that it’s striking the right chords with both critics and gamers alike.
Now, Nine Sols isn’t the only game this year drawing inspiration from FromSoftware, especially on PS5. There’s Another Crab’s Treasure, which takes a closer dive into this beloved genre, and then there’s Stellar Blade, another hit incorporating Soulslike elements.
Yet, the heavyweight this year is undeniably Black Myth: Wukong by Chinese developers Game Science. Since its launch in August, it’s sold a whopping 20 million copies and even snagged a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards.
If you’re into challenging, well-crafted games, this year’s selection has quite a few gems you don’t want to miss!
