Portia Maye, now known as The Houndmaster, once dreamed of a life filled with adventure and the warmth of her father’s love. Raised at sea aboard her father’s ship, Nightsdream, her dreams were shattered by the ruthless pirate Mad Molak, who bloodied the seas and left few alive. Portia survived, kept around only as a celestial navigator. Her heart turned cold with a desire for revenge as she plotted her moment to strike.
In a twist of fate, she sailed Nightsdream into the perilous Dragon’s Tooth, dooming her oppressors to the depths. Portia survived against all odds, eventually finding companionship in a loyal puppy named Snug. She once epitomized survival, enduring not just the massacre but also years marooned on Dragon’s Tooth, though her thoughts were consumed by vengeance.
Dragon’s Tooth was, unbeknownst to Portia, a Bleed—a place where dimensions collide. “Entering a Bleed affects you profoundly,” says Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind. “It either breaks you or drives you mad.” Portia’s path led her to master her violent tendencies until her ruthlessness even outshone Molak’s. By the time she enacted her revenge, her role in The Entity’s world was engraved.
Remaining tethered to her humanity only through Snug, Portia commands The Houndmaster’s Power, harnessing Snug’s skills to pursue and capture Survivors.
### Dark Allegiances of the Black Talon
Taurie Cain grew up surrounded by the enigmatic Black Talon, a subset of the sinister Black Vale. Her life’s quest was uncovering The Entity’s secrets, spurred on when her parents disappeared into a Bleed, driven by research. Despite the risks, Taurie followed, tripping into a dark spiral where she pledged herself to a malevolent cause.
Climbing the ranks of the Black Talon, Taurie’s path crossed with other Survivors like Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto. Unlike others, Taurie embraced the darkness, believing The Entity offered keys to transcend mortality. “Taurie believes truly in her mission,” says Jessi Thind. “Her dedication grew darker over time, forcing a decision no one should face.”
Her story pivoted as she was assigned to eliminate Jordan Rois, Haddie Kaur’s stepbrother. With hesitation, she faced the choice before her, holding a knife meant to sacrifice him for ritual. This moment marked one of her last before The Fog claimed her.
In The Fog, her expectations crumbled, morphing her excitement into dread. Despite everything, Taurie clings to the belief that her ultimate purpose hasn’t been revealed. “She thinks it’s all part of a grand plan,” Thind adds. “It’s part of her strength—a belief in being The Entity’s chosen Killer one day.”
The burning question remains: why is Taurie cast as a Survivor here?
“The Entity thrives on emotions,” Thind elaborates. “It sensed an opportunity with Taurie, amidst tension with disbelieving companions. Taurie’s resentment fuels The Fog’s hungers—conflict breeds the fuel it feeds upon.”
Regardless, Taurie resolves to flourish in her new reality. Her skills emphasize evading alliances and drawing the Killer’s gaze, using her pain to strengthen her resolve.
It’s an intriguing twist of fate that both Portia and Taurie encountered Bleeds, though Taurie’s outlook remains untainted. If circumstances differed, might their roles in The Entity’s Realm have swapped? Nonetheless, their destinies set course, veiled within the endless Fog…
