Everyone’s pretty much aware of how disappointing Sony’s Spider-Verse has been without Spider-Man himself front and center. But, despite this, the director of “Kraven the Hunter” is hoping you’ll give his film a shot.
We’ve had Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web—all tied to Spider-Man, all under Sony’s banner, and let’s be honest, not exactly cinematic masterpieces. Sure, Venom has its charm if you’re into that kind of thing, but generally speaking, it’s been a rough ride for these Spider-Man spin-offs. J.C. Chandor, who’s directing the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter” movie, is the first to admit that the previous films haven’t exactly wowed audiences. Still, in a chat with ComicBook, he encouraged fans to hold off their skepticism and give his movie a chance.
“I don’t want to dive too deep into the details,” Chandor began. “But from a filmmaker’s perspective—especially in the past few years where fans have definitely been vocal about their disappointment with certain aspects of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe—my main goal is to address some of those concerns.”
He went on to say, “Yes, some films haven’t been well-received, but others have thrived massively. It’s been hit or miss. We really need people to give us a shot, to support this new film, and to try to move past the shortcomings of the past.” Now, I might suggest he’s leaning a bit too hard on statistics because out of Sony’s five live-action Spider-Verse adventures, only the Venom films have truly taken off. Venom is, after all, a far more familiar and beloved character compared to Morbius or Madame Web. So calling it a “mixed success rate” feels like a bit of a stretch.
Chandor also expressed hope that viewers will recognize the effort his team has put into crafting an enjoyable storyline. “Once you’ve seen the movie, you’ll find all kinds of potential for new stories. But my immediate aim was to focus on this movie alone, to shield it, and just tell a straightforward, engaging tale. And sure, there’ll be room for plenty of exciting things to come.”
As for what those exciting things might be, well, that’s anyone’s guess. Naturally, everything rides on how well the film performs, and we’ll just have to wait and see.
Mark your calendars because “Kraven the Hunter” swings into theaters on December 13.
