Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is set to make its debut in virtual reality, launching exclusively for the Quest 3 and 3S next week. This anticipated release is the result of a collaboration between Playside Studios and Meta, promising to bring both single-player and online multiplayer experiences to the Quest platform starting April 10th.
In this VR adaptation, players will find themselves taking on the familiar challenge of guiding their chosen nation through the annals of time. Just like on PC and console, you’ll select a leader, and then strategize whether to form alliances or engage in epic battles against other global powers.
If you’ve yet to dive into any of the Civilization games, here’s what awaits you in Civilization VII – VR: You begin by selecting a starting age, each offering its own set of challenges and perks. For instance, in the Antiquity Age, you’ll lay down the building blocks of your empire. Move into the Exploration Age, and you’ll set out to discover new lands. Fast forward to the Modern Age, and the focus shifts to advances in technology and industry.
The VR version distinguishes itself with a unique feature: the immersive ‘War Table’. This innovative addition lets you command your civilization much like a traditional tabletop game. You can zoom in, pan out, and adjust the table’s angle to get the best strategic vantage point on your growing empire.
On this virtual battlefield, you’ll confront rival civilizations, engaging directly with both AI-driven and real human opponents. Here, your diplomatic skills will be tested as you decide whether to broker peace or prepare your troops for war.
Additionally, players will enjoy both virtual and mixed reality modes. The mixed reality mode is particularly interesting as it incorporates passthrough technology, allowing you to remain aware of your physical environment while you strategize.
For anyone eager to experience this groundbreaking iteration, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR is currently available for preorder on the Horizon Store. It’s priced at $60 and can be played on both Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
