The rise of AI in our everyday lives is undeniable, playing a significant role at home, at work, and even in schools. The latest Microsoft Global Online Safety Survey highlights a notable shift, revealing a jump from 38% in 2023 to 51% of global users engaging with generative AI as of 2024. Impressively, Generation Z is leading this trend with 64% of young adults having dabbled in AI. As tech and gaming professionals, it’s our responsibility to guide these young minds, ensuring they harness AI safely while nurturing their interest and inventiveness.
In line with Safer Internet Day 2025, Minecraft Education is rolling out a fresh chapter in the CyberSafe series that delves into AI’s risks and advantages through interactive, game-centered challenges. CyberSafe AI: Dig Deeper, available for free on the Minecraft Marketplace and within Minecraft Education, tasks players with crafting guidelines for the safe and responsible use of AI.
### Safely Navigating Real-world AI Dilemmas
The new DLC plunges players into the role of a student planning a school fundraiser. As they explore using AI to mass-produce 3D-printed animals from STEM lab designs, they encounter familiar snags and risks that come with employing AI creatively. They learn that AI outputs can be unpredictable and must be cross-referenced with reliable sources. Although players don’t interact directly with generative AI in the DLC, they engage in simulated scenarios, helping them grasp responsible use of AI while understanding the dual nature—both beneficial and harmful—of AI in real life.
“AI innovation thrives on human creativity. This venture is a significant step towards empowering educators, children, and families with the know-how to navigate AI wisely, capitalizing on its potential for positive change,” notes Carlos Figueiredo, Director of Player Safety at Mojang Studios, in celebration of the CyberSafe content’s global reach.
### Advancing AI Literacy and Skills
Building on the success of previous CyberSafe DLC installments, CyberSafe AI: Dig Deeper continues to teach essential digital skills like password security, data privacy, and combating online bullying. Last year’s Good Game motivated countless gamers to draft in-game conduct guidelines. The collaborative efforts of Xbox and Minecraft have seen over 80 million downloads of the CyberSafe series since 2022.
With Dig Deeper, players will learn key questions to pose when interacting with AI and AI-generated content, fostering a mindful and safe approach to these technologies. The ultimate takeaway is that despite AI’s incredible capabilities, it must operate under human guidance, input, and oversight to function safely and effectively. The Minecraft Family Cyber Toolkit offers additional resources to aid in navigating the CyberSafe DLC experience.
