When Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was announced last April, it caught many fans by surprise, and pleasantly so. It’s been nearly seven years since the debut of its predecessor, and this sequel aims to outshine the original in every way. Warhorse Studios has certainly made significant strides since their crowdfunding days, which funded the inaugural Kingdom Come installment.
Dedicated fans of the series have been holding out hope for a sequel ever since the first game made waves in 2018. Despite the first game’s success and its ability to set the stage for further adventures in its medieval European world, some intriguing revelations about Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 suggest that crafting a third installment for the series might be more challenging than expected.
Now, one of the reasons the original game earned such praise was its immersive, real-world feel, especially its combat system. Players stepped into the shoes of Henry of Skalitz, experiencing his evolution from a humble blacksmith’s son to a formidable knight. The game’s finale suggested a clear path forward, practically hinting that a sequel was on the horizon. With the new game, however, Warhorse Studios is taking a different approach, introducing multiple endings.
This choice to incorporate several endings could make it tricky to plan another sequel because they’d have to decide which of the endings in KCD2 would be considered the “true” ending. This poses a dilemma that could create some rifts within the Kingdom Come community. Additionally, implementing similar gameplay advancements in a sequel as substantial as those anticipated in KCD2 could present another set of challenges for the developers.
The trailers for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 have already teased fresh additions like crossbows and early firearms, promising to deepen the combat dynamics beyond what was available in the original. The sequel is expected to offer larger environments too. While these enhancements plot a clear course for refining gameplay in KCD2, replicating such innovations in a third entry might prove difficult.
While it’s possible Warhorse could extend the series beyond Henry’s story, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 appears poised to give Henry the satisfying conclusion he deserves. The multiple endings may, however, suggest that the upcoming title could stand as a standalone sequel without a direct follow-up. Balancing new gameplay elements and satisfying narrative arcs will be crucial if Warhorse considers expanding the Kingdom Come universe further.
