Tencent is set to end all Nintendo Switch Online services in China by 2026, impacting millions of gamers. This marks a significant shift, as Tencent’s partnership with Nintendo has been crucial in boosting the Switch’s popularity despite China’s strict region restrictions. Gamers with activated Switch consoles in China can still enjoy redemption codes for free Nintendo games until May 15, 2026.
Tencent has confirmed plans to gradually discontinue Nintendo Switch Online in China, leaving a vast number of players without access by 2026. This phased shutdown means that by March 31, 2026, the Chinese Nintendo eShop will stop selling games and software. After this date, new free trials of Switch Online will no longer be available. However, code redemptions will be honored until May 15, 2026. Beyond that date, Nintendo eShop downloads and other online services will cease entirely.
Although Tencent hasn’t provided a specific reason for the shutdown, a silver lining exists for affected players. Between November 27, 2024, and March 31, 2026, those with an activated Switch in China can claim free redemption codes for popular Nintendo games through their WeChat accounts. This offer includes titles such as Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Pokémon Let’s Go! Eevee.
On another note, Nintendo has yet to officially announce the successor to the Switch, but speculation suggests it may be revealed by March 2025. The gaming community is buzzing with anticipation around the potential features and release date of this next-gen console. While the specifics of the launch lineup remain under wraps, fans hope for an impressive rollout to match the hype surrounding Nintendo’s future plans.
