Recently, a new tool called Junk Store emerged on the Steam Store, making waves for its ability to integrate third-party game stores like Epic Games and GOG into the Steam Deck’s Gaming Mode. A shoutout to GamingOnLinux for bringing this to light. This functionality resembles what Decky Loader offers—a plugin launcher that enhances the Steam Deck experience with additional software capabilities. However, Junk Store’s creators at SDK Innovation are aiming to have it recognized as an official Steam Deck app, avoiding the need for any technical tweaks by users.
The Steam Store listing declares, “Junk Store is now on Steam. Remade from scratch, it eliminates the need for Decky Loader. Now, enjoy installing your favorite games from the Epic Games Store and GOG directly in game mode.”
In a Reddit post on r/JunkStore, the developers revealed they’ve made the Steam Store page to measure the project’s popularity through ‘Add to Wishlist’ clicks. However, it’s still uncertain if Junk Store will officially join the Steam library since it requires Valve’s green light before its final debut. Yet, the team perceives Valve’s approval of the page as a subtle nod of approval.
It’s worth noting that Junk Store won’t be free or open-source on Steam. This is because the developers had to rebuild the app entirely to ensure smooth operation on SteamOS, especially without relying on Decky Loader’s existing capabilities. Details on pricing are still up in the air as the team is assessing development costs and community interest and, being a small team of just two, they don’t have a launch timeline yet.
Despite these uncertainties, Junk Store is proud to be the trailblazer as the first plugin to hit the Steam Deck app store. The team emphasizes that this app could pave the way for future developments and aims to provide a great experience for gamers, developers, and the Steam community.
For those who love to tinker with their Steam Deck, you might not need Junk Store from Steam, as you can utilize Decky Loader for free. But for gamers who are just looking to enjoy their games without fuss, the Steam version of Junk Store could be an appealing option for accessing titles purchased on different platforms.
