Lunar Remastered Collection has just launched today on Xbox One and is fully compatible with Xbox Series X|S. In honor of this release, I had the pleasure of speaking with Amy Nguyen, the Senior Graphic Designer at GungHo America. She shared insights about her creative process for crafting the new logo, her inspirations, and what went into the design of the collection.
When I caught up with Amy, I was curious to learn more about her background and some of her standout projects at GungHo. “I’ve tackled a variety of projects,” she shared, “from designing tournament assets to working on collaborations with famous intellectual properties. My first big project as a creative lead was the 2024 console port of Grandia.”
I was eager to know how she felt when tasked with the Lunar logo. Amy admitted, “I was thrilled but a bit apprehensive. The logo is a significant part of the brand identity, so it was crucial to get it right. I designed multiple versions, refining each one until we arrived at the final design based on feedback.”
Considering the legacy of Lunar’s previous logos, I asked Amy if they played a role in her new design. “Absolutely,” she said. “For a remaster, it was vital to honor the original logo that fans love. My starting point was research, followed by brainstorming and sketching lots of concepts. Eventually, we landed on a design that nods to the iconic red ‘Lunar’ text and added gold accents to highlight the fresh, remastered feel.”
Amy walked me through the many iterations the logo underwent. “The process involved maintaining the nostalgic colors while introducing elements of the remaster,” she explained. “I explored varied accents, like the dragon sword and blue star, and experimented with different font shapes before deciding on the perfect blend.”
Highlighting a specific detail from the final logo, Amy said, “I really like the extended tail on the ‘R’ in ‘Remastered.’ It’s a playful homage to the original Lunar logo, and I enjoy how it stands out with the serifs accentuated in ‘Remastered Collection.'”
We also discussed the new key visuals by Lunar’s original artist, Toshiyuki Kubooka. “His artwork was impressive,” Amy remarked. “The darker backgrounds and collaged compositions were a new twist. Designing the packaging was smoother because the original visuals fit the cover layout almost perfectly.”
As the conversation shifted to the back cover’s design, Amy shared her thought process. “I had more flexibility here,” she noted. “Incorporating pixel sprites was a must—they bring nostalgic charm. With screenshots and the remastered logo elements, I balanced both games using a gradient that tied them together as a cohesive collection.”
When asked about her favorite part of the package design, Amy said, “Collaborating with Mr. Kubooka and the supportive teams at GungHo and Game Arts was fantastic. Everyone’s hard work culminated in a package that I hope fans will appreciate.”
