Let’s get one thing straight: Mecha Break is exceptional. I first tried it about a year ago and was already impressed, but playing it from home recently, I’ve become completely hooked. Sure, there are some issues, but for an open beta during Steam Next Fest, I’m struggling to think of another game I’d rather dive into right now.
For those not familiar, Mecha Break is an online multiplayer shooter. It lets you team up with others in two modes: the traditional online PvP battles and the extraction-shooter style PvPvE fights known as Mashmak. There’s a good selection of mechs to choose from, along with unlockable colors and pilot outfits, which isn’t too shabby for a beta phase.
Talking about Mashmak, it’s pretty solid. The map is vast, and the battles against other players are consistently thrilling. And let’s not forget the map bosses — massive robots that feel more like raid bosses than anything else I’ve encountered in similar modes. Yet, my true love affair is with the classic online PvP. The six versus six action feels incredibly engaging, possibly my next live service obsession. I’ve found it even more enjoyable than Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, or Rainbow Six Siege.
Why is that, you might ask? Well, there are two compelling reasons. First off, the presentation is stellar. If you’re into mechs, this game is a visual treat. Picture this: compact mechs with snipers, transforming mechs that become planes for bombing runs, towering tanks with gatling guns, and even those wielding axes. The variety is astonishing, and I’d be surprised if nothing catches your interest. Sure, some of these mechs require a lot of in-game currency to unlock, which is a bit of a downer, but thankfully, you can gather a diverse lineup without having to grind too much.
Secondly, the movement system is top-notch. Initially, it’s about boosting to your destination and mastering basic air and ground maneuvers. As you get the hang of it, you’ll start zipping around like a pro, managing energy and executing intricate maneuvers. With skill, two mechs can engage in an intricate dance of battle, especially with melee combat. It’s a game of parries, dashes, combos, and ranged attacks, creating a satisfying spectrum of skill expression.
Regarding the beta, the game is pretty generous with rewards. There’s a battle pass, not yet fully unlockable, but it seems an entire mech might be tied to it. Hopefully, free-to-players won’t find it too tough to access these, but for now, everything seems fairly standard. The game also includes mods that can offer statistical boosts, crafted by combining various Mashmak pickups. While these rare mods raise a few concerns about balance, it’s uncertain just how challenging they’ll be to collect without spending money. Fingers crossed, it won’t be too taxing.
In its current state, it’s a fantastic game that just appeared out of nowhere during Steam Next Fest. Do yourself a favor and give it a download if you’re in the mood for a fresh PvP shooter. It truly stands out in its own unique way. Jump in, and I’m confident you’ll discover a playstyle that captivates you.
