MultiVersus, the knockout punch of a brawler from Player First Games and WB Games, is preparing to take its final bow this May. In a recent blog update, the developers confirmed that the fifth season will mark the game’s swan song, with servers coming to a close on May 30 at 9 a.m. PST / noon EST.
Launching on February 4, 2025, the fifth season is pulling out all the stops by introducing its last two characters: the sea king himself, Aquaman, and the charmingly chaotic Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. To make sure you’re in on the action after the servers go down, simply hop into the game at some point during this season. Post-shutdown, you’ll still be able to enjoy the game offline, battling AI or teaming up with friends for some good old couch co-op fun.
There’s a catch though. Once the servers are down, new players won’t be able to download MultiVersus, so if you’ve been on the fence, it’s time to leap into the fray on Xbox, PlayStation, or Windows PC once Season 5 begins.
Ongoing Struggles for WB Games
MultiVersus debuted back in 2022 as an open beta, making a splash with its Smash Bros.-esque gameplay and a wild ensemble cast of characters from all corners of Warner Bros.’ universe. This meant you could pit Shaggy against Batman or Arya Stark against Superman—pure madness!
In our review of Multiversus’ open beta, my colleague Miles Dompier had high hopes, noting that while "MultiVersus has an undoubtedly exciting future, the limited content offered will likely disappoint players hoping for more than just online skirmishes. Thankfully, the free-to-play model makes the barrier to entry outstandingly low."
Despite its beta status, the game saw a surge of support with many players opting to buy the Founder’s Packs, making it July 2022’s top-seller in the U.S. After a year in early access, developers paused the action to refine and enhance the game.
When MultiVersus made its comeback in May 2024, it struggled to reignite the same excitement and player numbers it once commanded. By November 2024, WB Games claimed the game didn’t hit the mark performance-wise.
MultiVersus isn’t alone in WB Games’ lineup of challenging live service experiences. Another recent example is Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which wrapped up support with its fourth season. The company reported a whopping $200 million loss from the title.
Looking forward, WB Games appears to be setting its sights back on single-player adventures. Rumors suggest they’re working on a definitive edition of Hogwarts Legacy, which topped the U.S. sales charts in 2023 and has remained a staple since. This enhanced version supposedly includes an expansion brimming with new stories and quests, but details remain scarce as of now.
