Will the next installment in the Battlefield series be the breakthrough that the franchise needs to reclaim its status as a heavyweight in the shooter genre? Can it rise to such a challenge? EA is undoubtedly hoping for a resounding yes to both questions and is pulling out all the stops to ensure success.
However, these high hopes could come to a halt with a disastrous launch, ending up only beloved by its most devoted fans. As someone who’s been a fan of Battlefield for years, I’m rooting for this upcoming release not only to meet expectations but also to establish itself as a go-to shooter that I can return to time and again.
At this point, details about the forthcoming Battlefield game are sparse at best. EA has yet to officially confirm a 2025 release date. Nonetheless, considering recent moves within EA’s stable of studios, 2025 seems like a logical launch year.
EA appears to be eyeing a setup akin to Call of Duty: Warzone for the new Battlefield. We might see the premium game making its debut in late 2025, followed by a free-to-play battle royale mode in early 2026.
Early 2025 is likely when some testing phases might commence, although they’ll probably be under strict NDAs, leaving us wanting more information about the game’s essence. All signs suggest that the new Battlefield will embrace a modern-day milieu and revisit the series’ classic class system.
While those plans sound promising, they are no guarantee of a top-quality game. They do, however, reflect EA’s awareness of what players are craving, which piques my curiosity and excitement for trying out the game.
Battlefield has always boasted unique features; its trademark lies in combining elements like combined arms combat, asymmetrical class systems, and large scale map battles with a level of destructibility that’s hard to replicate. These components are scattered across various games, but none manage to blend them quite like Battlefield does. Even the recent Delta Force reiteration underscores just why that magic is tough to emulate.
Still, every misstep Battlefield takes dims that distinctive allure. We all know players who were once die-hard Battlefield fans and have now shifted to other games. Yet, if you ask them, few would say these alternatives fill that same void; they might be entertaining enough to keep you engaged, but they rarely feel like the true successor to the Battlefield legacy.
