If you’ve ever dreamt of diving into No Man’s Sky and channeling your inner dinosaur enthusiast—maybe even while imagining a romance with Jennifer Aniston—today might just be your lucky day. Hello Games has rolled out their latest update, Relics, which lets you dive into the fascinating world of alien fossil collection.
This comes hot on the heels of the Worlds update from January, which introduced a plethora of stars and planets to explore—think massive gas giants and quirky flying squid creatures that aren’t too happy with your fishing exploits.
In their blog post and the accompanying video, Hello Games lays out the highlights of the Relics update, focusing on the intriguing addition of space paleontology. It’s reminiscent of Ross Geller’s job from Friends, minus the holiday armadillo and sandwich dilemmas.
Now, you can wander through the galaxy like David Schwimmer, uncovering “hundreds of unique bones” and piecing them together in your museum. Imagine the creative possibilities—perhaps convincing No Man’s Sky’s diverse alien species that they descended from the ridiculously advanced, if somewhat odor-challenged, Fartongueians. It sounds like a challenge worth taking on.
However, there’s a twist. The update also brings in the Reanimated Guardians—massive stone beings that sleep near fossil beds, ready to defend these ancient sites from overly inquisitive travelers. These guardians resemble impressive stone robots more than creatures with faces made for laughs, so my earlier theory might need some rethinking. Alongside them, you’ll find Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies—huge statues left by extinct alien civilizations keeping a watchful eye on relic worlds.
You could also stumble upon creatures that seem frozen in time, like Titanic Boneworms and “skeletal fauna,” lingering on bone-strewn planets and perhaps even some purple star systems. For a bit of commerce, you can chat with Fossil Collectors on Space Stations, exchange your crafted fossil displays for their vast array of relics, or even use bones for cooking.
On top of that, there’s the Galactic Palaeology Society’s new expedition to consider. It offers rewards like a jetpack crafted from sentient rock, an appearance override to mimic a sentient rock, and even a skeletal animal companion by your side.
