The forthcoming off-roading adventure, Over the Hill, by the creative minds behind Absolute Drift and Art of Rally, Funselektor, along with partner Strelka Games, made its first splash with a gameplay trailer at the recent Triple-i Initiative indie showcase.
First revealed in January, this game takes the sleek, minimal art style synonymous with Funselektor’s past hits and gives it a SnowRunner twist—minus the hassle of towing vehicle trailers. Although Over the Hill plays around with game trailers quite enthusiastically, it shies away from hitching trailers to your ride.
If you catch the trailer, the game’s appeal is evident. Despite the release date still being under wraps, Over the Hill has already attracted over 200,000 wishlists on Steam. It promises the classic getting-stuck-in-mud experience and adrenaline-pumping winch maneuvers, all without the financial strain of owning a Land Rover that’s one bad day away from a costly breakdown.
Even better, you can invite up to three friends to join your journey in retro off-road vehicles that echo the charm of the ’60s to the ’80s. Funselektor stays true to its retro motoring essence, now setting the stage for traversing rugged terrains across all seasons and weather conditions.
A glance at the UI shows a refreshingly simple design, featuring a mini-map reminiscent of an Ordnance Survey map—something your dad might have struggled with on a countryside trip. We also get to see the winching mechanics in action. Fans of SnowRunner will find familiarity here, as it involves picking a point marked by a circular dot and reeling it in with finesse.
Additionally, there’s a glimpse of vehicle customization options to enhance your off-road machine, along with a photo mode. Capture the glory of reaching a mountain peak—or the hilarity of a tumble down a slope. Both memories deserve a spot in your gallery, in my opinion.
