This month, we’re adding five stunning cars to your virtual garage.
Ford Escort RS Cosworth ’92
You can snag this gem from Used Cars. It’s a special WRC homologation, flaunting a distinct double-decker wing design.
Ford kicked off their early ’90s World Rally Championship races with the Sierra RS Cosworth 4×4. By 1992, the Escort RS Cosworth entered the scene, a homologation special made for increased prowess. The original Escort’s legacy traces back to rally stages of the late ’60s and ’70s. Ford Europe took this classic, strapped in the Sierra’s high-powered four-wheel drive system, and topped it off with a striking dual-level wing. Under the hood roars a longitudinally-mounted 2L turbocharged twin-cam engine from Cosworth, precisely engineered for performance with a 1,993 cc displacement, kicking out 223.9 BHP/30.4 kgfm in stock form.
Its robust four-wheel drive setup relies on a central differential aided by viscous coupling and planetary gears, ensuring durability. Production started in 1992, and it achieved homologation in 1993, storming the WRC’s Group A category. Endearingly dubbed the "Cossie," it claimed victories in the Portugal Rally and sequential win streaks in the Tour de Corse and the Acropolis Rally, proving again that Ford was a force in the rally racing sphere.
Mercedes-Benz W 196 R ’55
Want to own a piece of racing history? This one’s in the Legend Cars.
The W 196 was Mercedes-Benz’s response to the new F1 regulations in 1951, crafted for the 2.5L engine rules introduced by Formula 1 in 1954. This model saw the development of two sister variants: the W 196 for F1 and the W 196 S for sportscar racing, both achieving notable triumphs. This sleek beast hit the track, debuting at the 1954 French Grand Prix, sporting a streamlined body that cloaked the wheels.
Critics of the design noted issues with visibility and upkeep, leading Mercedes to favor the open-wheel style from the German Grand Prix onwards, reserved the streamlined version for specific high-velocity tracks. The vehicle boasted seven variants through different combinations of body and mechanical configurations. At its heart lay a distinctive inline-8 engine, akin to a longitudinal join of two four-cylinder banks. At top performance, this engine generated 285 BHP, driving it up to 180.2 mph. The W 196 clinched consecutive F1 World Championships in 1954 and 1955, taking Fangio to two drivers’ titles.
Porsche 911 Turbo S (992) ’20
This beauty can be found at Brand Central.
Embodying Porsche’s iconic prowess for over 60 years, the eighth generation 911, codenamed 992, hit the streets in 2018. Its design refined features from the 991 while broadening the body, and extensive use of aluminum kept weight under control. Porsche did away with the narrow-body version, and the car was based on a new MMB modular platform allowing adaptability between rear-engine and midship layouts.
Opting for engine downsizing, the standard Carrera models came with a turbocharged flat-6 engine, scaling up in power from 379.7 BHP in Carrera models to 443.8 BHP in Carrera S models. In April 2020, the Turbo S came into play, boasting a 3,745 cc flat-6 twin-turbo monster delivering 641 BHP/800 Nm of torque to all wheels.
Porsche Mission X ’23
Get this hypercar concept at Brand Central, marking Porsche’s 75th anniversary.
Starting in 1948, with the legendary Porsche 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster, the brand has shaped sports car history. And this June 2023, they introduced a concept reimagining the future of sports car technology inspired by Porsche’s storied legacy: meet the Mission X.
Although compact at 4,500 mm long, this fully electric hypercar concept wows with bold, sculptural design lines. It features nostalgic elements from Porsche’s racing era, from the retouched quad lights reminiscent of models like the 906, to the upward-swinging doors mimicking the 917. Inside, motorsport nuances persist, highlighted by an open yoke steering wheel with paddle shifters and mode toggles. Porsche Design developed an optional analog-digital stopwatch, and video recording harnesses multiple onboard cameras for a thrilling experience.
In Gran Turismo 7, the Mission X targets the Nürburgring Nordschleife record as the fastest street-legal car, boasting a power-to-weight ratio over one PS per kilogram and more downforce than the 911 GT3 RS. Its revolutionary 900 V system quickens charging significantly, outpacing even Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S.
Suzuki Jimny Sierra JC ’18
Secure this model through Brand Central.
The Jimny’s petite dimensions slot it under Japan’s kei car category, yet it hides a mighty off-roader within its ladder-frame skeleton. The global variant, Jimny Sierra released in 2018, liberates its off-road potential from domestic restrictions. The JB74 chassis emerged as the third edition since its 1994 predecessor.
Eclipsing the JB43 by a wider stance and shorter length, this model sports a noticeably boxier appeal. Underneath, the 1,460 cc inline-4 DOHC K15B engine pushes 100.6 BHP/13.3 kgfm, emphasizing low-end torque for off-road agility. Its part-time four-wheel-drive links to a manual transfer case, while rigid axles provide impressive suspension, conquering concrete and gravel alike.
