Sony Interactive Entertainment finds itself at an intriguing crossroads with its efforts in the multiplayer live-service gaming domain. While the PS5 made waves with the success of Helldivers 2, it was overshadowed by Concord’s stumbling start. Yet, in spite of these setbacks, Sony appears determined to crack the live-service genre, as suggested by a fresh job posting.
A new job advertisement from PlayStation Studios drops some interesting hints about a new AAA original property, which looks set to be a cooperative game. This job listing, found by Tech4Gamers, is for their budding Los Angeles studio and seeks talent to help “create the next groundbreaking AAA original IP.” Although similar language has appeared in previous listings, this one offers a glimpse into what they might be brewing.
Scrolling through the qualifications, most of what you’d expect is there, but a particular requirement stands out. The listing notes the need for “experience with and knowledge of cooperative multiplayer design principles and ideals.”
This strongly hints that the LA team is crafting a co-op multiplayer title intended to stand shoulder to shoulder with PlayStation’s iconic franchises. Beyond these few breadcrumbs, though, the project remains shrouded in mystery.
Earlier this year, whispers of this new studio surfaced with another job listing, fueling speculation. Buzz has it that Jason Blundell, a veteran of the Call of Duty franchise, might be leading the charge following the closure of Deviation Games in 2023. Some former teammates have confirmed they’ve joined PlayStation’s ranks under his direction.
Reports suggest that the rocky debut of Concord prompted Sony to rethink its approach to live-service titles. As shared by industry insider Jeff Grubb, the company is reevaluating its live-service lineup and has shelved several projects, including a multiplayer spinoff of God of War envisioned by Bluepoint Games.
