Ancient Dungeon VR, the popular rogue-lite dungeon crawler, has just received a significant update on PSVR 2 that introduces multiplayer co-op to the game.
Originally making its debut in 2021 through Steam Early Access and the now-defunct App Lab for Quest, Ancient Dungeon started as a single-player adventure. Gamers were immersed in over 20 hours of twisting, labyrinthine dungeons, engaging in physics-driven battles against blocky wizards, skeletons, and other foes inspired by classic D&D lore.
Back in mid-2024, both the Quest and SteamVR versions delighted fans with four-player co-op capabilities. However, the PSVR 2 edition, launched in December 2023, didn’t initially receive this multiplayer feature, leaving those players on the sidelines.
The wait is over, as Eric Thullen, the creator of the game, has now rolled out the eagerly anticipated multiplayer update for PSVR 2. This means that up to four players can now dive into the procedurally-generated dungeons, face treacherous traps, and battle fearsome enemies together in co-op mode.
In a recent Reddit Q&A, Thullen mentioned that cross-play isn’t yet available across the game’s various platforms. However, the indie development team has confirmed that cross-play with Quest and PC VR is on the horizon and “will be coming at a later date.”
Ancient Dungeon has become one of VR’s standout indie success stories. It initially gained attention through a thriving Kickstarter campaign in 2020 and later released a highly-praised beta version. With over 1,000 reviews, it boasts an impressive score of 4.8 out of 5.
Fast forward nearly five years, and Ancient Dungeon is still going strong with regular updates. These updates have introduced new weapons, cosmetics, insights, dungeon floors, and relics, all laying the groundwork for the game’s big 1.0 release. However, the development team has indicated in a Steam update that this milestone is still “a ways to go.”
For those eager to dive in, Ancient Dungeon VR is available on Steam for PC VR headsets, the Horizon Store for Quest, and the PlayStation Store for PSVR 2, all at a price of $20.
