Without a doubt, Strange World stands out as one of Disney’s brilliantly underappreciated gems. This adventure flick, with its pulp-inspired vibe, expertly weaves in Disney’s usual generational trauma narrative. It unfolds the story of the Clade family, spanning across three generations, each holding their own vision for what their family should be. As the grandfather, father, and son confront their distinct perspectives, Strange World simultaneously showcases some of Disney’s most breathtaking animation. Unfortunately, it didn’t receive nearly enough attention in theaters. Drawing creative energy from classic adventure movies like Indiana Jones, this film also integrates strong environmental themes against the backdrop of a stunning alien realm. The world presented is a visual feast, brimming with awe-inspiring landscapes, vibrant characters—both human and otherwise—and intriguing, bizarre creatures. Yet, amid its eccentric elements, the core conflicts remain deeply human. The Clade family’s journey to understand one another takes them through treacherous and uncharted territories, pushing them to see the obvious that’s been right in front of them all along. Sadly, due to Disney’s lackluster marketing, this film became one of the biggest box office flops ever. But here’s the good news: if you’re subscribed to Disney+, you can stream it now, and it’s absolutely fantastic. Honestly, it deserved a lot more recognition.
