Rec Room continues to expand its offerings with exciting, first-party adventures that you can dive into with both friends and strangers. The latest buzz around town is ‘Run the Block,’ an experience clearly inspired by the nostalgia-inducing Jet Set Radio from the Dreamcast era back in 2000.
This multiplayer mini-game made its debut on December 11th and has already charmed over a million players. Much like Jet Set Radio, ‘Run the Block’ sets you against up to nine others in a vibrant urban environment, where you’ll dash and parkour your way to victory.
Though you won’t find the aggressive rollerblades of the early 2000s in this game, the thrill of running, leaping, and grinding across vast networks of lines remains intact. Plus, adding your personal flair with graffiti tags in this street art-filled city is part of the fun.
Reflecting on the year, Rec Room has somewhat scaled back the number of new first-party titles, focusing instead on highlights like ‘My Little Monster,’ a pet farming simulator. Besides introducing themed content such as avatar packs from ‘Monster High’ and elements from Bungie’s shooter, Destiny, Rec Room seems to have spent considerable effort enhancing their creator suite this year. This allows users to design not just intricate worlds but also sell assets in the creator economy. The platform also rolled out full-body avatars earlier, giving players more customization options.
This year, Rec Room broadened its reach by launching on the Nintendo Switch in November, extending its platform compatibility with systems like PC VR, Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
