Indie publisher Reforged Studios has recently made headlines again with its third acquisition this year, securing South African developer Yellow Lab Games. While the financial details remain under wraps, it’s affirmed that Yellow Lab will maintain its independence, as confirmed by GI.biz. They’re currently working on a roguelite RPG, Metavoidal, set to hit Steam in the first quarter of 2025.
This strategic move follows Reforged’s acquisition of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios back in August, marking an aggressive expansion streak. Peter Van Der Watt, the CEO and founder of Reforged, shared his thoughts on the acquisition: “Having grown up in South Africa, I’ve always recognized the exceptional game development talent the country nurtures. Yellow Lab Games caught my attention some time ago, especially with the warm reception Metavoidal received—it’s their debut venture into PC and console gaming.”
Van Der Watt has been a passionate advocate for South African game development ever since he established his first studio in Scotland in 2011. He expressed enthusiasm, saying, “The entire Reforged board is excited about the potential this region holds. When the chance to bring David Hecker and his talented team from Yellow Lab into our fold came up, we jumped at it. We’re thrilled to welcome South Africa’s finest to the Reforged team and see this as the first step toward greater investment in Africa’s growing gaming industry.”
