Showtime is making waves with its ongoing efforts to revive Dexter, and fans are buzzing with excitement as we finally get a glimpse of the new prequel series, Original Sin, through its first trailer.
It’s been over a decade since Dexter originally aired, but in today’s world, where reboots and intellectual properties reign supreme, the beloved series is getting another shot at the spotlight. Following the 2022 release of Dexter: New Blood, which took place a decade after the original show’s conclusion, Paramount and Showtime are now unveiling the prequel, Dexter: Original Sin. If you’re about to watch the trailer and dig deeper into this next chapter, be mindful of spoilers related to the end of New Blood, as the prequel intriguingly ties into the events of the sequel. Consider yourself alerted!
The trailer kicks off with some gripping scenes from New Blood, depicting Dexter lying in the snow, blood pooling around him after being shot by his son, Harrison. As he receives medical attention, viewers are taken through a journey of Dexter’s past, which sets the stage for this prequel series. Officially, the plot outlines Dexter: Original Sin as set in 1991 Miami, following Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) through his transition from a student to a vengeful serial killer. He’s at a point where he can no longer suppress his darker instincts and is forced to reckon with them.
With his father, Harry (played by Christian Slater), as a mentor, Dexter finds a way to satisfy his bloodlust by following a Code: a moral guideline that directs him to eliminate those he believes are beyond redemption, all while avoiding police detection. This becomes particularly challenging as young Dexter embarks on a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.
Adding to the excitement, Michael C. Hall returns as the voice behind Dexter’s inner monologue, while Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy fame makes a guest appearance. Although being a prequel suggests that Dexter’s fate is more or less secured, the journey is expected to be thrilling nonetheless.
The looming question of Dexter’s fate at the end of New Blood might find its answer, considering another sequel, Resurrection, is on the horizon. Fans can speculate that the prequel might conclude with Dexter awakening from what should have been his demise, but to see how it all unfolds, you’ll have to tune in when Dexter: Original Sin premieres on Paramount+ on December 13.
