There’s some buzz going around about a new game from Ubisoft that’s piquing the curiosity of many in the gaming world. Dubbed ‘Alterra,’ this upcoming title is rumored to be a voxel-based social simulator, taking cues from the massively popular Animal Crossing. It’s a bold move, especially considering the existing Xbox titles like Stardew Valley and Coral Island that already compete for players’ attention in this genre.
Insider Gaming shares that Alterra is set to offer a whimsical island adventure, featuring NPCs known as Matterlings. These are charmingly stylized with Funko Pop-like appearances. The game is expected to incorporate building mechanics reminiscent of Minecraft, enabling players to construct their dream island getaway.
Beyond the shores of our own islands, Alterra reportedly invites us to embark on journeys to different worlds, each boasting unique biomes. These biomes are more than just a visual treat; they offer new materials necessary for crafting back home. Every realm is said to carry a distinct theme, complete with local Matterlings—creatures that blend fantasy elements and real-world animal traits—alongside themed enemies and resources.
According to circulating reports, Ubisoft plans to enrich the game by regularly introducing new Matterlings throughout its lifecycle, with variations that flaunt differing outfits and other customizations. While it’s mentioned that the game might include player interactions, the specifics on how multiplayer will evolve remain a bit hazy. Perhaps players will have the chance to visit and explore each other’s crafted worlds?
Interestingly, Alterra has its origins in a previously cancelled voxel-based project and has been quietly in development for about a year and a half at Ubisoft Montreal. The creative force behind it includes Patrick Redding, who you might recall from Gotham Knights, while the production is being led by Ubisoft veteran of 24 years, Fabien Lhéraud.
In related updates, Ubisoft fans also have fresh details to look forward to regarding the stealth mechanics in the much-anticipated Assassin’s Creed Shadows. But circling back to Alterra, does the idea of a social sim with Ubisoft’s touch excite you? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
