Riot Games, the studio behind League of Legends, recently announced a significant policy change targeting content creators who breach its terms of service, even outside the gaming sphere. Starting January 3rd, the company plans to take action against creators displaying inappropriate behavior when their games are being featured.
In a detailed blog post, Riot explained the rationale behind this shift. The move aims to safeguard players from encountering toxic conduct that could affect their overall gaming journey. The update, which falls under the ‘Off-Platform Conduct’ policy, explicitly targets content that showcases Riot’s games.
Riot elaborated, “Our goal with this update is to shield players from harmful interactions they might face in parts of the online world linked to their gaming life.” Interestingly, this policy doesn’t mean Riot will be scouring all of social media for misconduct; rather, it reserves the right to impose in-game penalties when offensive behavior is reported. For example, should a creator utter offensive slurs about a competitor or team member on a live stream, even if not within the game’s chat or voice channels, Riot can still treat it as if the misconduct happened in the game environment.
