If you haven’t come across “The Summer Hikaru Died” yet, its first trailer is likely to get you intrigued enough to add it to your Netflix watchlist.
It’s not every day that you see slice of life and horror genres combined, but that’s exactly what “The Summer Hikaru Died” offers. This manga, which started back in 2021 and continues to release new chapters, follows two characters, Yoshiki and Hikaru, in a quiet Japanese town. Everything seems normal until Hikaru dies suddenly and an eerie supernatural entity takes his place. Yoshiki finds himself grappling with the unsettling truth that his real best friend is gone. The concept is quite chilling, and after much anticipation, the first trailer for its anime adaptation has finally dropped, promising the ominous atmosphere fans are looking forward to.
Make sure to check out the trailer above. It doesn’t reveal too much, but it definitely sets the mood. Ryohei Takeshita, known for his work on “Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night,” is the director of this adaptation. The main character, Yoshiki, is voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi, whose previous roles include lead roles in “Hell’s Paradise” and “Reynatis.” His counterpart, Hikaru, is brought to life by Shuichiro Umeda, known for “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” and “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.”
Takeshita shared his thoughts, saying, “Diving into the original work was thrilling, and I spent a lot of time figuring out how to translate its unique panels into animation. Our team has been deeply committed to portraying the subtle emotions of Yoshiki and Hikaru and capturing the manga’s innovative structure. We can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
As for when you can watch it, there’s no specific release date just yet. But don’t worry, it’s slated to air in the latter half of 2025, so you won’t have to wait forever. Stay tuned!
