Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2, despite being heavily featured in PS5 Pro promotions, didn’t initially meet expectations upon release. This lukewarm reception prompted a patch that notably removed a significant feature touted by the PS5 Pro.
Digital Foundry shared on Twitter that the patch swapped out Sony’s proprietary PSSR with Unreal Engine 5’s standard TSR during the game’s Performance Mode. Interestingly, while this change may seem like a downgrade, it actually resolved several issues players had reported.
After the patch, the game’s frame rate saw considerable improvement, now consistently achieving a smoother 60 FPS. This development serves as a cautionary tale regarding Sony’s $700 mid-generation console update, marketed primarily at hardcore gamers but perhaps not delivering as expected.
