After a successful run with its popular VR combat sim, Blade & Sorcery, which officially launched in June 2024, the team at Warpfrog is already diving into their next project. This new title, much like its predecessor, promises to be highly flexible for modding, maintaining the engaging, physics-driven interactions that have become a staple of Warpfrog’s style.
Although specific details about the upcoming game are still bubbling under the surface, Warpfrog has revealed that it will remain a VR experience enriched with the studio’s signature blend of physics-based gameplay and simulation depth. Importantly, player modifications, which have been a large part of Blade & Sorcery’s appeal, are expected to feature prominently once more.
Blade & Sorcery’s willingness to embrace modifications, whether through tools like the Nexus Mod Manager or hands-on manual tweaks, is one of its biggest strengths. Players could get as creative as adding more visual effects to weapon clashes or integrating entirely new maps and arsenals crafted by the user community. This enhanced flexibility truly extends the life and experience of the game, offering countless opportunities for personalization and creativity.
In a discussion with Meta last October, Warpfrog shared insights into their development journey. They mentioned working on an entirely new framework for their next project, moving beyond the limits of their established coding to support a new engine. This transformation involves rebuilding from the ground up, which should significantly improve efficiency and collaboration.
“We needed to untangle some of the spaghetti code and optimize our way forward,” the studio explained. “Starting fresh means designing a framework specifically tailored for our growing team, marking our first venture working comprehensively from start to finish with the full crew on board.”
The evolution from a solo endeavor led by developer ‘KospY’ to a thriving team of almost 30 members hints at exciting times ahead for Warpfrog. Such growth not only increases the team’s capability but also raises expectations for their future projects.
Blade & Sorcery’s grand June update introduced the new ‘Crystal Hunt’ mode, morphing the game from just a combat playground into a full-fledged narrative adventure. It now boasts elaborate progression systems, an expanded storyline, and a now broader interconnected world, offering gamers an immersive experience that extends well beyond intense melee battles.
Reflecting on the journey so far, Warpfrog expressed optimism in a Steam news update, hinting at even bigger adventures to come. “Looking ahead… this is where the real adventure starts. With the extensive experience we’ve gained over these five years, we’re thrilled to unveil what we’re working on next. Your support has been paramount in helping us dream up larger, more ambitious games,” they shared enthusiastically.
