Australian indie developer Team Cherry has finally given eager fans a tiny bit of news about their highly-anticipated Metroidvania game, Hollow Knight: Silksong. This follow-up to their widely celebrated original game has become somewhat of an inside joke in gaming circles, as its release window is still unknown a whopping six years after its initial announcement.
Back in 2017, Team Cherry wowed the gaming community with Hollow Knight. The game thrust players into the shoes of a quiet warrior navigating a decayed underground kingdom, taking on numerous challenging bosses. With its stunning art, captivating music, and tough-as-nails gameplay, the indie game was a hit among both critics and gamers. Riding on that wave of success, the creators quickly started crafting DLC, which eventually ballooned into a full-fledged sequel. Announced in February 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong has since kept fans in suspense with no release date in sight, pushing even the most patient of them to the brink.
Team Cherry’s latest update, a small glimmer of hope for fans, came in the form of a Twitter post. Fielding a question on whether the game was still a go, Matthew Griffin, the studio’s head of marketing and publishing, confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong “is real, progressing, and will release.” This statement has reignited optimism among players hoping for a 2025 release announcement, especially since 2024 came and went without any sightings of the game at premier events like Gamescom or The Game Awards, leaving fans more than a little frustrated.
Some fans have speculated that the extended development period means the game is stuck in ‘development hell,’ but that’s not the case, according to a playtester back in June 2024. Initially slated for a release in the first half of 2023, the studio admitted they needed more time, yet left followers hanging without any deeper insight into the game’s progress. Once the game does hit shelves, players will step into the shoes of “Hornet,” a brand-new protagonist exploring the haunted realm of Pharloom. According to Team Cherry, this installment promises to be larger than the original, featuring over 100 distinct checkpoints and about 165 new foes to face off against.
While updates about this much-awaited sequel are few and far between, there’s buzz that Hollow Knight: Silksong might make its debut on the upcoming Switch 2. Some speculate that Team Cherry might be tweaking the game to suit this new console, while others cross their fingers for a reveal on February 14, marking the anniversary of the game’s first announcement back in 2019. As the rumor mill keeps churning online, fans are clinging to the hope that Hollow Knight: Silksong will finally land in their hands sometime in the coming year.
